Dominance War Mini _War General Portaits

Hi, everyone This is my entry for the Dominance War Mini Challenge

The subject was the War General Portraits. They provided 3 kinds of base mesh and i had to

choose one of them. I added about 500 polygons and used 1024x1024 for the textures.

I don't have any recent drawings to post, but I do have photos. These are from a photoshoot on Saturday and the model's name is Terry.

Terry

And just so it's kind of art related, here's a before and after Photoshop:

Terry Before & After

There's a bigger version here so you can see the details better:

I sped up my process a little, but still needed another hour to finish up this one. I'm getting better at pacing myself and want to try to finish paintings in one 3-hour session instead of two 3-hour sessions.

Again we had Tamara come in with costumes from her burlesque show. I'm happy with bits of this, but I liked last week's more. There are some areas I'd like to continue working on. I hope to update this after I've spent some more time with it.

I had some thoughts about your paintings, Vo, and took a few moments to make some notations in photoshop.

I think the largest issue here is one of lighting. The image has no real light source and, consequently, lives in realm between 2D and 3D. Examination of the details - individual muscles, etc - reveals a suggestion of 3D that works in a convincing way, but stepping back and taking in the entire image has a very different impact, one that is flat. My suggestion is to establish a light direction to give your image an overall 3D effect, as well as enhance drama through contrast.

In addition to this large suggestion, I've made 4 changes to smaller, more technical issues:

  1. No one has ever accused me of knowing my anatomy, but the muscle on the thigh here seems too large (although my version may be a too small).
  2. The abs are too chiselled. She's wearing a bathing suit, but even if she weren't they'd still have that problem of looking a bit like they're carved into a totem pole rather than a naturalistic feeling of skin over muscle.
  3. The transition of the bosom is too extreme, like spheres glued onto a surface.
  4. The left armpit is too low, she's tilting in the opposite direction as her armpits.

another long pose

this is my second attempt using my laptop for the long pose. didn't have a chance to work on the background, i was really just focusing on the figure. I will do more painting at this wednesday session and try to use digital one week and then traditional the week after.

01/17/09_figure drawings (charcoal)

some 25 min poses from Sat figure drawing session.

Thursday, January 15, 2009

I've been trying my hand at using photoshop at life drawing the last 5 times I've gone. I finally got to try it out on a 3 hour pose and this is the result. I'm also experimenting with color here, and I think I need to shift some of the skin tone away from the blue a bit.

another steampunk robot

did another rough sketch of steampunk robot. the last one was short and stocky, so this time i went for something looks more slim.

12g. Revolver

I finished up a refined version of the 12g. Revolver today. I think I will take it into 3d and make some renders from a few different angles :)

Sat life drawing session - 1/10/09

It was one of those day I just couldn't draw anything right. started to feel better towards the end. These were the last two sketches. i really wish i had more time with these, at least to bring out more highlight. Well...it's just another drawings i guess.

This is my setup at home. I'm trying to establish a workflow and a layout that is easy to access. I'm using a timer to evaluate how much time I'm actually spending drawing vs. how much time I spend going through prep work.

1st and 2nd vine charcoal copies of John Singer Sargent. This is my first time using this type of medium, and the first attempt was not precise. The second time around I figured that I had to sharpen the charcoal stick more often because vine is very soft. The results were much better.

1st post!!!

rough idea of steampunk robot. spent about 2 hr.
